Not every wall is a good candidate for hiding cables inside it. Concrete, brick, cinder block, and old plaster walls all make it impossible to fish wires down to a power outlet or component shelf below the TV. For these situations, wire raceway — a paintable, on-wall cable cover — is the practical, code-friendly way to keep a wall-mounted TV installation looking clean without opening up the wall.
Below we cover when on-wall wire management makes sense, the benefits of using raceway over other cable concealment methods, and real installation photos from wire raceway jobs we’ve completed across the GTA.
When Does On-Wall Wire Management Make Sense?
Wire raceway is the right call in a handful of common situations we run into on TV wall mount installations:
- The wall doesn’t allow fishing wires. Concrete walls, brick walls, cinder block walls, cement walls, and exterior plaster walls in older homes have no cavity for cables to travel through, ruling out standard in-wall wire concealment.
- There’s no outlet near the TV. When there isn’t an electrical outlet anywhere on the wall — or it’s too far horizontally from where the TV will be mounted — running a new outlet or installing a bridge-style power kit isn’t always worth the added labor and cost.
- Budget is a priority. Raceway keeps cables tidy without the expense of an electrician or additional in-wall hardware.
- You’re renting. Tenants who don’t want to invest in a new outlet or power kit — and don’t want to patch holes in the wall when they move out — get a clean, reversible install with raceway.
- You don’t mind the look. Modern raceway is low-profile and paintable to match the wall, so plenty of homeowners are happy to use it purely on its own merits.
- The cable run is short. When the distance from the TV to the component stand or media furniture below is short, it can often be tucked behind a picture frame or other decor along the way.
Benefits of Wire Raceway for TV Cable Management
- Neat, finished look. Raceway channels every cable into one clean line instead of letting them hang loose against the wall.
- Cost-effective. No need for a new electrical outlet or a bridge-style power kit behind the TV.
- No drywall repair. Since nothing goes inside the wall, there’s nothing to patch when you move or change your setup.
- Paintable finish. The raceway we install can be painted to blend seamlessly with your wall color.
Wire Raceway Installation Examples
Here’s a look at on-wall wire management installed across a range of wall types and room settings — from exposed concrete lofts to condos, offices, and fireplace installations.
Wire Raceway vs. In-Wall Wire Concealment
If your wall has an open cavity — standard drywall over wood or metal studs — in-wall wire concealment is usually the cleaner option, since cables disappear completely behind the wall. Wire raceway is the go-to alternative whenever that’s not possible, or when cost and reversibility matter more than a fully hidden run. Many of our TV wall mount installations use raceway specifically because the wall is concrete, brick, or otherwise unsuitable for fishing wires.
Whichever wall type you’re working with, a well-planned home theater or TV installation should account for cable management before the TV ever goes up — it’s far easier to plan the raceway route or in-wall path at the start than to retrofit it later.
